Being straight with you: if you land in daylight, travel light and have no kids, PickMe is genuinely fine and cheaper. This is for the 2am arrivals, the families with luggage, and anyone who doesn't want to negotiate a fare after a ten-hour flight.

How far is it, really?
Colombo airport is at Katunayake, 35km north of the city — not in Colombo. Negombo is the closer beach town, 15 minutes up the road, which is why most people spend their arrival night there.

Arriving at Colombo airport — what to know
It's not in Colombo
Katunayake, 35km north. Negombo is 15 minutes; Colombo is 45–60 minutes on the E03 expressway.
Most flights land in the small hours
European and Gulf arrivals cluster between 1am and 4am. Plan your first night for rest, not sightseeing.
Buy your SIM before you exit
Dialog and Mobitel counters are in the arrivals hall. Tourist data packages are cheap and it's the easiest place to sort it.
Duty free works on the way in
Sri Lanka is unusual — there's an arrivals duty free, so you can shop on landing rather than departure.
Change some cash at the airport
Enough for your first day. Airport rates beat hotel rates.
Check your ETA visa before you fly
Requirements change. Confirm the current rule on the official site rather than a travel blog.
Walk past the touts
There are taxi touts past the exit. A pre-booked driver holding your name means you don't have to deal with them.
